The Grateful Dead’s ’87 tour was one of the most anticipated comeback tours in rock music. After Jerry Garcia’s health scare the previous summer (he was in a coma), nobody was sure the band would ever tour again. But 1987 marked the triumphant return of the band to form with the release of the platinum-selling In The Dark, and a string of shows throughout the spring/summer.

Just steps away at the Guvernment, Benny Benassi and a then-rising Avicii were commanding their own stages, making this night a true snapshot of EDM history.
This performance marked a pivotal moment in deadmau5’s career—showcasing the genesis of his now-iconic, high-tech stage production. With a kinetic, cube-shaped DJ booth and a sound and lighting setup that shook the entire block, the show was a sensory overload for the 2800 fans in attendance. It was also the turning point: within a year, Joel was headlining stadiums like the Skydome, and two years later, he co-founded Veld Music Festival, solidifying his place as one of electronic music’s premier global headliners.
